YOU Can Make a Difference!

The effects of non-sustainable palm oil production on indigenous people as well as Asian elephants, orangutans, tigers and other wildlife has become a very pressing issue. At the rate that the rainforest is being cut down, many of these species are at a very high risk of becoming extinct.

Though some believe that boycotting the issue of palm oil (simply not purchasing anything made with palm oil) would be a good answer, the fact of the matter is that palm oil plantations, when maintained in sustainable fashions, can produce not only a conservative remedy for ecosystems, it can also create much needed financial resources to the indigenous people who depend on the global export of a goods to sustain a means of living.

Becoming aware of the issue is the first step to action. Our planet is an ecosystem of extreme biodiversity and it is our obligation to ensure its beauty and well-being for future generations. Becoming an aware and smart consumer of sustainable palm oil will not only make a difference in the world today, but it will impact the future of tomorrow.

If you are concerned about the effects of NON-sustainable palm oil production we encourage you to read the following and visit cmzoo.org:
  • Shop responsibly.
  • Use your power as a consumer!
  • Go see wild orangutans.  Your tourist dollars make the rainforests worth more standing than cut down for plantations.  Check out Ecotourism.
  • Learn more.  Spread the word.  Send the link for our video Make a Difference for Wild Orangutans to your friends and family.
  • Be a responsible wood and paper consumer.
  • Ask for FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood and lumber products.
  • Use recycled household and office paper products (examples: paper towels, bathroom tissue, notebooks, stationary, and printer paper).
  • Recycle paper and cardboard.
  • Write to your local legislators and The President.  Ask them not to explore non-sustainable palm oil as a bio-fuel option.  Cutting down rainforests to grow palm oil is   not   a “green” substitute for gasoline.
  • Write to Indonesian and Malaysian government officials.  Ask them to preserve their precious natural resources.  They are the only countries in the world that have wild orangutans!
  • Help with reforestation projects.  Go to forests4orangutans.org for more information.
  • Buy Orangutan Art at cmzoo.org – 50% of each purchase goes to orangutan conservation.

Steps to Taking Action:

  1.    Step 1: Become Aware
2.    Step 2: Become a Smart Consumer

Don’t see a specific company or product on the shopping guide list? Take action and write a letter to companies, urging the importance of their efforts in supporting the use of sustainable palm oil. Sample Letter to Company

With The United States as one of the top consumers of palm oil it is important that we, as a nation, set an example for others in the importance of sustainable palm oil.
